Short Story YESTERDAY by Haruki Murakami

Analysis

Haruki Murakami’s short story YESTERDAY is about two Japanese friends who talk the dialect of each other to feel him included in the society. Kitaru who is from Tokyo talks the Kansai dialect to be accepted in kansai’s culture, and Tanimura-Kun who is from Kansai talks Tokyo dialect to be accepted, too. Kitaru has a different personality than other people. He loves the Kansai dialect beyond necessary, and he tries to entire to the university but he does not study for the admission exam, and he asks to his friend to go out with his girlfriend. On the other hand, Tanimura-Kun, who is in the university, is trying to understand him because although they are in the same job, Kitaru does not know what really want with his life. This short story has a symbol which is the title at the same time. I think this is the reason why the election of the title because it has a really important representation. YESTERDAY is a song from one musical group called the beatles which is specially sung, with different words than the original lyrics, by Kitaru when is with his friend Tanimura-Kun in the bathroom trying to share conversation trough a bath curtain, so it reflects the confidence that there is between them and their friendship. Also, this symbol reflects the special weird Kitaru’s personality, so it is through this song that Tanimura-Kun remember his friend. This story is narrated in first-person from the Tanimura-Kun’s point of view because the narrator uses de pronoun I, for example “It made me realize all over again how huge Tokyo was, and how many things there were that I didn’t know.” (Murakami, 2014). Besides, this short story talks themes about:

-       Troubles to find the purpose in life.

-       Fears about being discriminated by society.

-       The external and internal conflicts about the maturating process in life (broke up relationships, leave the high school, choose the university, and get job)
